Is it just a coincidence that English football’s three most successful teams — Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal — all play in red, or does the colour really boost performance and rattle the opposition? And what are we to make of the fact that England were playing in red, instead of the usual white, when they achieved World Cup glory in 1966?
Statistics show that in Euro 2004, wearing predominantly red was worth an extra goal a game on average. At the very least, that fact suggests that players find red-clad colleagues easier to pick out against the green of a pitch — unlike the grey strip Manchester United tried in the 1990s and which was blamed for a poor run of form.
