In 1974, Rattan Singh's brother Prem cleared the Union Public Service Commission examination, one of India's toughest tests, to get a civil servant's job with the central excise department.
Prem also sailed through a Punjab government exam to land a well-paid job in weights and measures. Unnoticed, Rattan pretended to be his brother and took his place.
Together, the twins from Anandpur Sahib enjoyed the success of their scam until Rattan Singh asked for voluntary retirement and demanded the release of his pension in 2002.
Rattan Singh finally lost his job in 2005 and both twins were charged with fraud and are still on bail awaiting trial.
Rattan Singh has since gone to the high court seeking a stay on recovery of £11,100. But a judge dismissed his plea.
