Evil, yes, but Josef Fritzl is chillingly ordinary...

When Karen Matthews was convicted late last year, along with her co-defendant Michael Donovan, of the kidnap and imprisonment of her daughter, Shannon, the police officer who led the investigation emerged from court and said that Matthews was "pure evil".

It's important to ask the question because the conclusion of the trial of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian who incarcerated his daughter and a family begotten by incest in his secret cellar for 24 years, and who yesterday changed his plea to guilty of all charges of imprisonment, rape and infanticide, has again attracted the label "evil". And we will add the usual adjectival qualification: he may be called "pure" evil, or even "uniquely" evil.

This is the thought that repels us. We cannot conceive of the suffering of Elisabeth Fritzl and her children. The rapes. Seven children, fathered by her father. The death of one baby. For 24 years. That's 24 years. In that cellar. Without daylight. Full story...
