Malaysia has approved a scheduled concert by Grammy award winner and R&B star Rihanna despite strong calls by hardline opposition Islamists for the show to be cancelled, the government said Friday. Earlier this week, the youth wing of the conservative Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) called for a cancellation of the concert, saying Rihanna's performances were unsuitable due to her daring outfits and raunchy dances. However, the government announced Friday that the show will go on as scheduled. “They can always protest, but the ministry has the final say,” Minister of Unity, Culture and Arts Mohamad Shafie Apdal was quoted as saying .
Rihanna is due to perform in Kuala Lumpur on February 13 as part of her “Good Girl Gone Bad” world tour. A PAS official said the party had yet to decide on the next course of action, but did not rule out a street demonstration or “other forms of protest” in response to the decision to allow the concert to go on.
