The Belgian crèche murders, the dark side of Europe and Gaza...

There is an article in today’s Timesonline about the Belgian crèche murders. It points out, correctly, how here in Europe, children are now the victims of all kinds of criminals. And the writer proposes tighter controls and more databases, as if there weren’t already enough of this. More Big Brother, in short.

But is that going to help? Should we be watched and indexed even more than we already are? Perhaps, that’s not the problem. The thing is, those who get away with this sort of crimes are often those who are in power, the ones who run the system, the very people who watch the rest of us. And they get away because their crimes take place behind closed doors, where no one is watching. They are watching us, but who is watching the watchers?

And then, look at Gaza. An entire State unleashes its power and kills hundreds of innocent people, many of them children, and renders the lives of thousands of others intolerable. And hardly a nation raises a whimper, protests or makes an attempt to stop the blood-bath. Incredibly, some of the most powerful governments on our planet even approve this madness.
Are we then supposed to be shocked and dismayed that some lunatic has gone into a crèche and killed innocent children? That this killing spree is a vile crime but not the one that is sanctioned by the State?
