Gaza: Israeli air strike kills two little girls...

"I saw two girls, ages 4 and 12 hit by a bomb from an F16,'' said Ewa Jasiewicz, an activist originally from Kingston, Surrey. "They were outside clearing some rubbish around their homes.

The younger girl, believed to be Haya Hamdan, died instantly and Miss Jasiewicz said Gaza's severe shortage of medical facilities hampered efforts to save the second girl, her sister Lama. "The people of Gaza have nothing left from the ongoing siege: there is not even an ambulance to take a child to the hospital.''

It was later confirmed the older girl died in hospital. "There is no excuse in dropping bombs on Gaza, as civilian deaths are unavoidable. More...

Egypt: donkeys ordered to wear ... diapers!!!

Donkeys have been banned from walking around in the streets of Egypt's southwestern al-Wadi al-Gadeed governorates without wearing diapers, an official said.

Mohammed Haround said the measure was to "preserve the aesthetic and cultural scene of the governorate which currently witnesses an unprecedented boom in tourism".

"Diapers are available in the markets at low prices," Haroun was quoted by the official MENA news agency as saying Tuesday. He added that owners of the donkeys who violate this decision will be fined.

Donkeys are vital for many Egyptians since they can easily carry 20-30 percent of their body weight and are helpful in farming. Donkeys and donkey-drawn carts are a common sight in Egypt's cities and countryside.

A furious public information battle is taking place on sites ranging from YouTube to Facebook between the Israeli state and Hamas.

Windows 7 Beta Review...

How does one review a supposedly new version of a product that they have, in reality, already been using for months? It's not easy, believe it or not: The Beta version of Windows 7 (build 7000) that Microsoft will later deliver to tech beta testers and then, in January, to the public, is nothing more than a very finely tweaked version of the various post-M3 (Milestone 3, or build 6801--see my lengthy overview of that build) builds I've been using since October. In fact, there is almost no difference at all between this version of Windows 7 and M3, assuming you've enabled all the hidden M3 features using Rafael Rivera's "Blue Badge" tool. More...

Global warming? And yet, 2008 was a pretty cool year...

As Christopher Booker says in his review of 2008, temperatures have been dropping in a wholly unpredicted way over the past year. Last winter, the northern hemisphere saw its greatest snow cover since 1966, which in the northern US states and Canada was dubbed the "winter from hell". This winter looks set to be even worse.

Evidence from all over the world indicates that the earth was hotter 1,000 years ago than it is today. Research shows that temperatures were higher in what is known as the Mediaeval Warming period than they were in the 1990s. More...

Shoe-thrower Muntadar al-Zaidi's trial postponed...

The trial of the Iraqi man who threw his shoes at US President George W Bush earlier this month has been postponed.

Muntadar al-Zaidi, 29, was expected to appear in court on Wednesday charged with assaulting a foreign leader, and faced a maximum sentence of 15 years.

But after an appeal, a higher court is now deciding whether he should face the lesser charge of insulting a leader.

The reporter achieved global notoriety by his actions, which were celebrated by thousands in the Arab world. More...

Gaza: after Dubai, Egypt too cancels New Year celebrations...

Egypt has cancelled official New Year's Eve events in solidarity with the suffering of the Palestinians being "massacred" in Gaza, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily reports.

"In solidarity with the painful events in the Palestinian territories and the massacres which Gazans are faced with ... the ministries of culture and information have decided to cancel New Year's festivities," the paper said on Wednesday.

Cancelled events include a special concert by famed Egyptian singer Mohammed Munir set to be held at Cairo's Opera House and a variety performance hosted by the ministry of information due to be broadcast on state television. More...

Israel's onslaught on Gaza is a crime that cannot succeed...

Israel's decision to launch its devastating attack on Gaza on a Saturday was a "stroke of brilliance", the country's biggest selling paper Yediot Aharonot crowed: "the element of surprise increased the number of people who were killed". The daily Ma'ariv agreed: "We left them in shock and awe".

Of the ferocity of the assault on one of the most overcrowded and destitute corners of the earth, there is at least no question. In the bloodiest onslaught on blockaded Gaza since it was captured and occupied by Israel 41 years ago, at least 310 people were killed and more than a thousand reported injured in the first 48 hours alone.

("Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!"), et qui mardi réunissait déjà 85.000 utilisateurs.

Gaza: Israel backed by army of cyber-soldiers...

Israel’s Government has thrown its weight behind efforts by supporters to counter what it believes to be negative bias and a tide of pro-Arab propaganda. The Foreign Ministry has ordered trainee diplomats to track websites and chatrooms so that networks of US and European groups with hundreds of thousands of Jewish activists can place supportive messages.

In the past week nearly 5,000 members of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) have downloaded special “megaphone” software that alerts them to anti-Israeli chatrooms or internet polls to enable them to post contrary viewpoints. A student team in Jerusalem combs the web in a host of different languages to flag the sites so that those who have signed up can influence an opinion survey or the course of a debate. More...

Gaza: all hotels in Dubai told to cancel New Year celebrations...

All hotels in Dubai have been told to cancel New Year celebrations, following an order issued by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Tuesday, Gulf News has learnt.

Shaikh Mohammad has ordered the cancellation of all forms of celebrations marking the New Year in Dubai, as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In support of the Palestinians in Gaza, who are enduring all kinds of killing, destruction and displacement by the Israeli military machinery, Shaikh Mohammad instructed all concerned authorities in Dubai to put this order in place and take necessary procedures to circulate the decision to all concerned parties.

As the world looks at Gaza,India and Pakistan moving troops to common border. Don't these guys just love messing around...

Pakistan said Tuesday that India had moved troops toward their shared border, following Islamabad's own redeployment of forces toward the frontier amid tensions over the Mumbai attacks.

But India's foreign minister insisted it had done nothing to escalate tensions in the region, while another Indian official denied a separate Pakistani allegation that New Delhi had activated forward air bases.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi made the claims in a televised address that included overtures toward India to resume peace talks between the nuclear-armed neighbors, who have already fought three wars in the past six decades. More...

Gaza attacks: Five sisters killed in their sleep...

The five Palestinian sisters were fast asleep when a night-time Israeli airstrike hit the next-door mosque in Gaza. One of the walls collapsed on to their small asbestos-roofed home and they were all killed in their beds. The eldest sister, Tahrir, was 17 years old, the youngest, Jawaher, just four.

"They grow up day after day and night after night. Within a second, I have lost them," the girls' father, Anwar Balousha, said yesterday. The 37-year-old, along with another three of his children, was himself injured in the attack on the densely populated Jabalya refugee camp. More...

Sicily: chapel in a supermarket! You can now shop and pray at the same time!!!

Praying and attending Mass while doing your shopping is now possible in a shopping centre near Messina in Sicily, in the south of Italy, where a chapel was inaugurated on Tuesday inside a supermarket, according to the Ansa agency.

Constructed inside a supermarket in a shopping centre in Tremestieri, near Messina, the chapel was blessed on Tuesday by the local priest.

It allows customers to enjoy a moment of retreat and silence, even in a shopping centre. The aim is to conciliate faith with man’s daily life, said Father Giuseppe Lonia, according to Ansa.

An official from the shopping centre, Maurizio Andronico, asserted that the chapel will be open to customers and workers and that Mass will be celebrated in it.

This is the first initiative of its kind in Italy, a country with a strong Catholic tradition, said the same source.

Nepal: maoists doing away with Indian temple priests?

One of the most famous sites in Hinduism, the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal, has experienced a significant break with tradition.

Its prayers always used to be led by high caste, Brahmin priests recruited from south India.

But now they have been replaced by local priests - ending centuries of tradition and long-held rituals.

The development can be seen as a reflection of wider changes that have swept Nepal over the past year. More...

Japanese dude living at Mexico City airport disappears...

A Japanese man who had been living in the Mexican capital's airport since Sept. 2 — for no apparent reason — left under equally mysterious circumstances.

Authorities searched Terminal 1 of the Benito Juarez International Airport for Hiroshi Nohara on Monday but he was nowhere to be found, said an airport official who was not allowed to be quoted by name.

The daily Reforma newspaper ran photos of the scruffy man getting into a cab Sunday at the airport.

Nohara's three-month residency at the airport made him a local celebrity whose life drew comparisons to that of Viktor Navorski, a character portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 2004 movie "The Terminal." More...

62 journalists killed in 2008...

The number of journalists, bloggers and media workers killed because of their work fell to 62 this year from 106 in 2007, the media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders says.

But the group said on Tuesday the fall in fatalities was not grounds for optimism over media freedom since in many areas the decrease showed only that violent repression had forced reporters to abandon their jobs.

The body also warned that state censorship was spreading to the internet. More...

Professor's prediction about U.S. demise in 2010 seduces Russian media...

For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few took his argument -- that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. -- very seriously. Now he's found an eager audience: Russian state media.

In recent weeks, he's been interviewed as much as twice a day about his predictions. "It's a record," says Prof. Panarin. "But I think the attention is going to grow even stronger."

Prof. Panarin, 50 years old, is not a fringe figure. A former KGB analyst, he is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats. He is invited to Kremlin receptions, lectures students, publishes books, and appears in the media as an expert on U.S.-Russia relations. More...

Satish Narayan, 47, an engineer, lost his battle to survive at the Royal Adelaide Hospital yesterday, 20 days after sustaining burns to most of his body.

The incident has now been declared a major crime by police and it is likely his wife, Rajini, will face a charge of manslaughter or murder.

Police have alleged Mr Narayan's wife doused his genitals with methylated spirit and then set him on fire about 5.30am on December 7. More...

A Swiss man suspected of involvement in the world's biggest nuclear smuggling ring has been released from prison after more than four years of investigative detention, his family said Sunday.

Soccer: fastest red card ever... after 3 seconds!!!

A player with English minor league club Chippenham Town has set a record for the fastest-red card in senior soccer when he was sent off for a wild tackle three seconds after kickoff, British media reported on Tuesday.

Striker David Pratt, 21, was dismissed in a Southern Premier League game against Bashley on Sunday.

The previous fastest sending-off is generally accepted to be 10 seconds for Bologna's Giuseppe Lorenzo after he struck an opponent in a 1990 Italian league game.

English soccer's previous "best" was 13 seconds when Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kevin Pressman handled outside his box in a game in 2000.

Also in 2000 an English amateur player, Lee Todd, was sent off after two seconds when he responded to the referee's whistle to start the game by saying "xxxx me, that was loud" and was dismissed for foul and abusive language.

Gaza: Obama’s silence on Israeli airstrikes disappoints many, but what did they expect? Change?

President–elect Barack Obama blew the first opportunity that had come his way to show that unlike his predecessors, he was going to adopt a more even-handed approach to the Palestine question by choosing to keep quiet after savage Israeli airstrikes across Gaza.

Obama who was expected by people in Arab and Muslim countries to turn his back on earlier American administrations that have supported Israel, right or wrong, could only have caused widespread disappointment among those who were hopeful that he would be different. If his first reaction to the Israeli outrage is any indication, it is clear that he is going to be as enthusiastic in his support of Israel as his predecessors. More...

Gaza massacre: 345 people killed, more than 1600 wounded...

Israel launched airstrikes on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip for the third consecutive day on Monday, leaving 345 people dead over three days and more than 1,600 wounded, according to Palestinian rescue workers.

In New York, the U.N. Security Council issued a statement Saturday and Sunday, calling for an immediate halt to all violence between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group which rules the Gaza Strip.

But the conflict is unlikely to end in the immediate future, given a no commitment by the United States, the only country capable of exerting influence on Israel.

Hamas has pledged revenge including suicide bomb attacks in the "cafes and streets" of Israel.

Israel said the strikes were in response to almost daily rocket and mortar fire by Gaza militants, which intensified after Hamas ended the six-month cease-fire a week ago.

French comic Dieudonné and Robert Faurisson...

The black French comedian Dieudonné provoked outrage at the weekend by giving a "heroism" award to a veteran Holocaust denier.

Dieudonné, who is known for making anti-Semitic remarks in his shows, handed the spoof award for "social unacceptability and insolence" to Robert Faurisson, an academic with a string of convictions for denying the existence of Nazi death camps in the Second World War. More...

Harold Pinter, the militant who wasn't afraid...

As we mourn the passing of one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century, let's not forget that the field of human rights has also lost a great defender of freedom of expression. During my time at PEN, Harold Pinter proved indispensable in helping to raise the profile of numerous, lesser well-known, writers in trouble for their work. He never let them down.

Much has been made about Pinter's refusal to tolerate bullying at school. He also took on many of the world's tyrants – however big or small – defending the rights of writers, journalists and human rights activists around the globe by lending his name or wielding his pen.  More...

Today I end my support of Israel...

Like davidminzer, I'm Jewish and descendant of holocaust survivors. Moreover, I've been a Zionist all of my life. I went to a Zionist school, I was active in Zionist youth groups. I've always been a fervent supporter of Israel as a refuge for Jews around the world who seek a place to exercise their traditions and embrace their identity in peace.

I sang the Israeli anthem in the train rails of Aushwitz-Birkenau and I pledged to fight every day of my life to make sure the savage crimes that had taken place there would never happen again. Every year I pledged: Never Again. Remember and Never forget.

Well, I haven't forgotten. And so to honor that pledge, to honor the memory of my family members who died in those death camps and because "there comes a time when silence is betrayal", today I finally and publicly end my support for the state of Israel.  More...

The Roma in Europe targets of rising racist attacks...

The collapse of social rights in post-communist central-eastern Europe has been most harsh on the Roma, a minority that is believed to have migrated to Europe from India since the 14th century.

While anti-Roma prejudices are strong in Central Europe, so far no political force has managed to garner support by rallying the population against them. But extremists now see a window of opportunity in mobilising anti-gypsy feelings.

"The gypsy theme doesn't create political divisions, it's an everyday thing for people on the left or right, and they (extremists) are trying to use this to gain some power outside of politics," Hungarian anthropologist Gergo Pulay told IPS. More...

Uganda: Lord's Resistance Army accused of massacre in church...

Attackers wielding machetes hacked to death dozens of people at a church in remote eastern Congo, witnesses said Monday, and the Ugandan army accused the Lord's Resistance Army rebels of the massacre.

A European aid worker said more than 100 people are reported to have been killed in the attack the day after Christmas and that the Congolese military put the number dead at 120 to 150.

The accused Ugandan rebel group, which has waged one of Africa's longest and most brutal wars, denied responsibility. Spokesman David Matsanga said the Lord's Resistance Army had no fighters in the area and he accused Uganda's army of the killings. More...

We've got so used to the carnage of the Middle East that we don't care any more – providing we don't offend the Israelis. It's not clear how many of the Gaza dead are civilians, but the response of the Bush administration, not to mention the pusillanimous reaction of Gordon Brown, reaffirm for Arabs what they have known for decades: however they struggle against their antagonists, the West will take Israel's side.

Suite...

Are Pakistani students brain-washed into hating India?

The empowerment of terror in Pakistan has not happened overnight. This is the logical culmination of the politics and policies pursued by Pakistan for years now.

Terrorism in Pakistan has its roots in the culture of hate and the ethos of inequality on the ground of religious faith, leading to their being deeply ingrained in the Pakistani psyche and mindset.

One factor that has played a crucial role in creating this culture of hate is the educational policy of the government of Pakistan pursued since 1977. The officially prescribed textbooks, especially for school students, are full of references that promote hate against India in general, and Hindus in particular. More...

Shah Duran, the deputy of Swat-based Taliban cleric Fazlullah, has warned the administrations of government and private educational institutions to not enrol girls in schools.

The Taliban on Wednesday issued a deadline for January 15 for the ban to be implemented, following which they said they would bomb the buildings of schools allowing girls to study.

Brazil: couple condemned for homeschooling their kids!!! WTF!

Cleber and Bernadeth Nunes from Timóteo, a city 196 km (122 miles) from Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, have been convicted by a second civil court in Brazil for homeschooling their children, despite passing government-imposed tests that teachers admitted they could not pass themselves.

The three judge panel in the court of second instance refused even to examine the test results, which give a passing grade to both of their sons, Jonatas and Davi de Andrade Nunes Amorim, 14 and 15, for a series of highly rigorous tests on a variety of subjects, including mathematics, geography, science, history, Portuguese, English, arts, and physical education.

(...)

Despite national assessments showing abysmal results from the Brazilian public education system, one of the three judges claimed in his written verdict that "the quality of our education is undeniable. If we compare ourselves, for example, average Brazilian citizens with average North American citizens, the conclusion is devastating. North Americans know little...in comparison to Brazilians. Our schooling is, to the contrary, very good in comparison to other countries." Full story...

U2's Larry Mullen Jr. blasts Bush, Blair and Bono...

U2 drummer LARRY MULLEN JR. has risked incurring the wrath of frontman BONO - he has reportedly blasted the singer for cosying up to world leaders.

The rocker launched a tirade against former Prime Minister Tony Blair and outgoing U.S. president George W. Bush, branding them "war criminals".

And he is said to have admitted it makes him "cringe" when he sees singer Bono associating with the pair.

In an interview with British music magazine Q, Mullen is quoted as saying: "Tony Blair is a war criminal and I think he should be tried as a war criminal. Then I see Bono and him as pals and I'm going, 'I don't like that'.

"Do I think George Bush is a war criminal? Probably - but the difference between him and Tony Blair is that Blair is intelligent. So he has no excuse for what he did."

Although Mullen admits Bono is "prepared to use his weight as a celebrity, at great cost to himself and his family, to help other people", he adds: "But as an outsider looking in, I cringe."

Article complet...

Holocaust novel exposed as fraud...

Herman Rosenblat's Angel at the Fence has been withdrawn by its publisher, Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin, following allegations by scholars, relatives and fellow survivors about its veracity.

Those taken in by the hoax include the producers of a forthcoming feature film adaptation and the television host Oprah Winfrey, who had hailed the tale as the "single greatest love story... we've ever told on the air".

In a statement issued at the weekend through his agent, Rosenblat, 79, said: "I wanted to bring happiness to people. I brought hope to a lot of people. My motivation was to make good in this world." More...

Facebook protesters: our breasts are not porn...

Online, the virtual "nurse-in" to protest Facebook's ban on breast-feeding photos has taken off, with hundreds hourly joining a group that crept toward 70,000 members Saturday evening.

The real-life, pavement-pounding protest drew fewer placards than photojournalists Saturday, with only a handful turning out to sing, chant and breast-feed in front of Facebook's downtown Palo Alto headquarters. But it had all the elements of a Palo Alto protest: A handful of peaceful pickets discreetly tucked away in a University Avenue plaza; placards reading "Hey Facebook, Breast-feeding is not Obscene,'' protesters chatting up the media; and indifferent passers-by. A member of the Raging Grannies, the Midpeninsula activists who stage various theatrical protests, showed up to proclaim in song that "our breasts aren't porn.'' More...

The men from this village who went to Russia to work all knew the rule: always stay together on the walk home. As Tajiks in an aggressive Russian city, getting caught could mean getting hurt.

But on the eve of the Muslim holiday of sacrifice this month, Salohiddin Azizov broke the rule. It was a fatal mistake.

He was caught, killed and beheaded on Dec. 5, not far from where he worked at the Pokrovskaya vegetable warehouse south of Moscow, his brothers said. A Russian nationalist group claimed responsibility, calling Azizov, 20, part of a "non-Russian occupation." One of his brothers identified his body by the shape of his toes. More...

Israel, the neighbourhood bully, strikes again...

Israel embarked yesterday on yet another unnecessary, ill-fated war. On July 16, 2006, four days after the start of the Second Lebanon War, I wrote: "Every neighborhood has one, a loud-mouthed bully who shouldn't be provoked into anger... Not that the bully's not right - someone did harm him. But the reaction, what a reaction!"

Two and a half years later, these words repeat themselves, to our horror, with chilling precision. Within the span of a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, the IDF sowed death and destruction on a scale that the Qassam rockets never approached in all their years, and Operation "Cast Lead" is only in its infancy. There's a cricket team in ... Afghanistan???

Afghanistan has only one proper cricket ground and its national squad earns only £12 a month, but next month the war-ravaged country will move a step closer to qualifying for the Cricket World Cup.

Two decades after cricket took hold among Afghan refugees sheltering in Pakistan from the Soviet occupation, the national side could be four months from joining the sport's top flight.

The team is flying to Argentina, where first or second place in the International Cricket Council league, division three, brings qualification for the World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in April. More...

Malaysian fortune-teller jailed for fleecing Singapore woman of $41.000!!!

A Malaysian fortune teller was sentenced to 15 months in jail by a Singapore court on Friday for fleecing a woman of 60,000 Singapore dollars (41,430 US dollars), the Straits Times reported Saturday.

Tan Ka Chuan received regular payments from Singaporean Lee Lye Fong in exchange for promises to perform rituals that would protect her family and make her wealthy.

Lee herself went through a police probe for dipping into the funds of her employer to pay for Tan's bogus promises.

Tan, 36 and a Malaysian national, used the money pay his gambling debts. He admitted to the police that he had no powers to see the future and did not perform any religious rites.

Lee's payments to Tan go back five years, said the report.

Man to wife at brothel: "what are you doing here?" Shouldn't the wife have asked: "what are YOU doing here?"

A Polish man got the shock of his life when he visited a brothel and spotted his wife among the establishment's employees.

Polish tabloid Super Express said the woman had been making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.

"I was dumfounded. I thought I was dreaming," the husband told the newspaper on Wednesday.

The couple, married for 14 years, are now divorcing, the newspaper reported.

Thank you, Harold...

In 1989, Denise Searle [Red Pepper’s first editor] and I, with others from the Socialist Movement, wrote to a large number of well-known left-wing dignitaries asking them to support a new fortnightly newspaper called Socialist. Harold Pinter was one of the few who responded.

He did not know us. We were not friends of friends. We were chatterers but not part of the well-known chattering classes. We promised simply to look at the facts without fear; to encourage the self-confidence to resist injustice; to imagine, create and work for alternatives.

Harold gave us his support. He also gave us confidence and his example encouraged others. From this I learnt that one of Harold Pinter’s distinguishing marks is his courage. His courage to speak out against the powerful. He doesn’t wait to find out who else might be supporting a cause. He doesn’t wait to find out whether it’s fashionable. Harold supports something because he believes in it. More...

“This book helped me create my identity,” said Naina Syed, 14, a high school freshman in Coventry, Conn.

A Muslim born in Pakistan, Naina said she spent hours on the phone listening to her older sister read the novel to her. “When I finally read the book for myself,” she said, “it was an amazing experience.” More...

Uproar over Great Aussie Firewall...

A proposed Internet filter dubbed the "Great Aussie Firewall" is promising to make Australia one of the strictest Internet regulators among democratic countries.

Consumers, civil-rights activists, engineers, Internet providers and politicians from opposition parties are among the critics of a mandatory Internet filter that would block at least 1,300 Web sites prohibited by the government - mostly child pornography, excessive violence, instructions in crime or drug use and advocacy of terrorism.

Hundreds protested in state capitals earlier this month. More...

Vietnam tightens the screws on bloggers...

The Vietnamese government on Tuesday announced regulations to tighten state control of internet blogs, a senior government official said Wednesday. Those posting items which oppose the state or undermine national security or spread works which violate Vietnam’s laws could face sanctions.

This may include opposing the state directly or posting links to sites banned in Vietnam, such as those which criticize the government’s human rights record.

"We have issued the circular aiming to create a legal framework to guide bloggers on what can they do and what they can’t do," said Do Quy Doan, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication, who likened the regulations to a "guiding document." More...

Berlin: 1,500 parrots in a two-room apartment!!!

Berlin officials said they have rescued 1,500 parakeets from a two-room apartment. City veterinarian Margit Platzer said the birds were flying freely around the apartment, which was "littered with feces, feathers and leftover food." Platzer said it took her team more than seven hours on Tuesday to catch all the birds with nets.

The birds were taken Wednesday to animal shelters in Berlin and elsewhere because there was not enough room for them at facilities in the capital.

Local media reported, without citing sources, that the owner gradually bought and bred the birds until his apartment was full, and that neighbors had complained about the noise and smell.

The retired man, who was not identified, could face charges for endangering the animals' safety and health.

Article complet...

Congo's coltan war: how the West can help...

As Simon Tisdall has pointed out on Comment is Free, the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo looks intractable – and there is little appetite, in Britain or elsewhere, to send more troops there. But while the fighting is not going to stop as long as militias control the region's natural resources, consumers in the west do have the power to limit their funds.

One of the precious metals mined in eastern Congo is coltan. It is used in many common products: mobiles, computers, digital cameras, GPS equipment, airbags, hearing aids and even pacemakers. While 80% of the world's known coltan reserves are in eastern Congo, only about 1% of the metal sold on the open market is Congolese. More...

5 things you (probably) didn't know about boobs...

There are far too many synonyms for breasts for us to list here; besides, you probably know most of them. But due the fact that our language is so well-endowed with reference to these funbags, we have to ask: Why are there so many slang terms for an aspect of the female anatomy that, medically speaking, is little more than an asymmetric pair of modified sweat glands?

One possible answer could be that we’ve created alternate terms as a means of subverting a topic that’s considered taboo. This purpose is especially applicable in America, where family values, proper neonatal care and breast frenzy have collided to form a prudish, hypocritical function of titillation. So, echoing throughout America is this sentiment: ”Don’t bare them in public if your goal is to feed an infant; that’s a distasteful turnoff.” More...

It's Christmas, but not for Zimbabwe...

Zimbabweans are facing yet another difficult year in 2009, unless a political settlement is found to arrest the fast deteriorating socio-economic conditions in the country.

Thousands of Zimbabweans are facing death following a cholera outbreak that started in August, while nearly half of the population is in desperate need of food aid. International response to the multiple crises facing the country is being complicated by the Zimbabwean authorities’ repeated attempts to politicise humanitarian work and cover up the extent of the problems bedevilling the southern African country for political reasons.

The cholera outbreak that started in August has exposed the extent of decline of the health services. Officially, over 1,200 people have died while nearly 24,000 cases have been recorded. However, the actual death toll is believed to be higher than that being reported, mainly due to a lack of capacity to document all the cases. More...

China quake teacher, Running Fan, has a new job...

A former high school teacher who fled his classroom during the massive May 12 earthquake in southwest China has a new job here in a private training school.

Fan Meizhong has a two-year contract with Keyfind Education School in the Haidian District, school spokesman Zhang Wenbin told Xinhua on Wednesday.

The former Chinese language teacher at a private high school in quake-hit Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, was nicknamed "running Fan" by netizens after he left his students behind and escaped the classroom as the 8.0-magnitude quake struck.

The disaster left more than 80,000 dead or missing.

Fan's behavior became an object of controversy, and he was later fired. More...

The orgy was organized by the Raelian movement, a UFO religion whose followers believe humankind was created by aliens. The group's spokesman, Kobi Drori, said that the orgy was meant to include straights, gays, lesbians and bisexuals, all of them over 18. More...

Suite...
