In New York, the U.N. Security Council issued a statement Saturday and Sunday, calling for an immediate halt to all violence between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group which rules the Gaza Strip.
But the conflict is unlikely to end in the immediate future, given a no commitment by the United States, the only country capable of exerting influence on Israel.
Hamas has pledged revenge including suicide bomb attacks in the "cafes and streets" of Israel.
Israel said the strikes were in response to almost daily rocket and mortar fire by Gaza militants, which intensified after Hamas ended the six-month cease-fire a week ago.
