Who says life ends at 90? Not this lady...

Roslyn B. Klein of Oceanside got her own private graduation ceremony at Hofstra University Tuesday. That was the least the university could do, said president Stuart Rabinowitz, for a 90-year-old who has completed her master's degree.

"I had to complete it. I did want that degree, and I'm going to hang it up on the wall in my living room," Klein said of the framed diploma conferring a master's of science in education with a specialty in counseling. "I really do not like incomplete projects."

She'd fallen just short of the degree in the late 1960s, when the pressures of full-time work as a physical education teacher in Lynbrook, four children and an ailing mother became too much. In the spring she contacted Rabinowitz to arrange to complete the necessary credits -- she had 36 and thought she needed three or four more -- but found she needed to write only one more paper.

She did so and qualified for the spring commencement. But her husband of 64 years, Raphael, died in May, so she didn't join the other graduates in the May 18 ceremony. More...
