ABuddhist abbot has been held by authorities in China after he allegedly killed three people in a nightclub 16 years ago before fleeing, shaving his head and hiding his identity by living as a monk.
Zhang Liwei had risen to become a member of the local political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, after he assumed his sacred identify in China’s eastern Anhui province. He was also a member of his local Buddhist representative organisation, local reports said.
“Everyone is surprised,” an employee at the local religious affairs bureau told The Beijing News.
“He was a hardworking and responsible person. Who would have thought he could be involved in something like this?”
Zhang was detained on August 12 after authorities discovered his true identity when he applied for a passport and attempted to go abroad and they took his fingerprints. Full story...
