The angry blog of an anonymous Japanese mother who criticised a nationwide shortage of childcare places has spurred the prime minister Shinzo Abe to take steps to reduce waiting lists, promising 500,000 new places by 2017.
The mother’s online tirade against the system after failing to secure a place for her child has been shared more than 50,000 times on social media and resulted in a 28,000-strong petition demanding improvements.
Japan’s childcare system has long been criticised due to an acute shortage of places, with as many as 23,167 children on the waiting list in April last year, creating difficulties for thousands of mothers unable to return to work following maternity leave.
The blog blost – entitled “I couldn’t get daycare -- die Japan!!!” – was written in unusually strong Japanese, with the anonymous author expressing her distress at not being able to obtain a place in the system.
“What am I supposed to do now?” she asked, in the popular blog which has gone viral and been picked up by mainstream media in Japan, published last month. “Give me a break Japan!” Full story...
