Three years after a brutal gang rape in Delhi shocked the world, India has recorded a 43 per cent increase in rape rate - with this rate more than tripling in Delhi.
36,735 rapes in total were recorded in 2014, of which 2,543 were gang rapes.
One woman was raped every 14 minutes in India in 2014, the data released from India’s National Crime Records Bureau show.
Three years ago today, a 23-year-old woman, Jyoti Singh Pandey, died after being brutally gang raped by six men on a bus in Delhi. The crime horrified Indian and global media, opening up a national conversation in India on sexual violence against women.
One of her convicted rapists, aged 17 at the time of the offence, is due to be released from jail next week. Four of the men were given death sentences and one later died in jail.
Delhi, where Pandey was raped, is the city with the highest increase in rapes recorded - with an increase of 210 per cent since the incident. One in every 4,185 of its 7.6m female population was raped in 2014. Full story...
