An Indian company has come up with a new scheme to tackle the problem of people urinating and defecating in the street – paying people a rupee each time they use public lavatories.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is implementing the new scheme to popularise public lavatories in 67 areas in the city of Ahmedabad where urinating and defecating in the street is common.
A similar scheme in Darechowk in Kathmandu in Nepal has already been hailed a success.
There are 300 public loos in Ahmedabad and the sanitary department aim to roll the rupee payment scheme out city wide as well as impose heavy fines on those who defecate in public places instead of public conveniences. Full story...
