Hong Kong mother 'starved and tortured' her maid...

An Indonesian maid accused her former employer of subjecting her to a horrifying campaign of abuse and "torture" on Monday on the first day of a high-profile trial in Hong Kong.

Law Wan-tung, a 44-year-old mother-of-two and former beauty parlour worker, faces a lengthy jail term if found guilty of 20 charges including grievous bodily harm and assault.

On Monday, a court in the former British colony heard allegations that Ms Law had used domestic implements including mop-handles, hangers, a ladder and even a vacuum cleaner to physically assault her former maid.

"[Law] threatened to kill my parents back home if I told people about the torture," Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, a 23-year-old migrant worker, told the court, according to the South China Morning Post.

Ms Sulistyaningsih's case sparked global outrage last year after pictures showing her badly bruised body went viral on the internet, underlining the often harsh realities faced by the estimated 300,000 domestic workers in Asia's most important financial hub. Full story...
