For expats in Asia money talks, sex sells and women pay the price...

In south-east Asia you seldom hear anyone use the term prostitute. Sex workers are euphemistically referred to as bar girls or karaoke girls and the softer language serves to melt away some of the taboos that surround this particular industry in the West.

When I was in England if one of my friends had openly discussed paying for sex I would have been shocked because at the time prostitution was something I associated with drug-addicted street walkers and deranged kerb crawlers.

It is possible Rurik Jutting might have had similar preconceptions before arriving in Asia, only to find himself enticed by an entertainment industry in which a wealthy Westerner can easily pick up women from countries where wages are low enough to make migrant sex work an enticing option.

 The banker from Surrey is behind bars in Hong Kong after the bodies of two Indonesian women were discovered in his upmarket apartment. Sumarti Ningsih, 25, and Jesse Lorena, 32, were both well-known faces at the bars and pubs in Hong Kong's red light district. Mr Jutting was also a well-known figure in the area and it sounds like his social life revolved around hanging out in the sort of bars frequented by expats with disposable income to spend and prostitutes looking to get their hands on some of it.
