A ruling party politician in Sri Lanka has been jailed for 20 years for killing a British tourist and taking part in a gang rape on his girlfriend.
Sampath Vidanapathirana and three others were sentenced by the High Court in Colombo earlier today over the killing of Khuram Shaikh, 32 from Rochdale, the Manchester Evening News reports.
The four were also convicted of raping Mr Shaikh's girlfriend.
Originally six men were charged with the offences but two were found not guilty after trial.
Mr Shaikh died at the southern tourist resort of Tangalle on Christmas Day 2011.
He was shot and stabbed at a hotel while on holiday. Full story...
