'I'm not going to Brazil' hashtag tackles World Cup...

A hashtag that started in Colombia as a simple question has become a global trend, and is being used by many online to protest Brazil's hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

#NoVoyABrasilPorque ("I am not going to Brazil because...") trended worldwide on Thursday, as Twitter users, mostly in Latin America and Spain, explained why they would not be attending the World Cup. While some of the tweets were humorous, many people used the hashtag to criticise Brazil's handling of tournament preparations and the condition of the country's poor.

Brazil has faced a number of setbacks and scandals in the run up to the World Cup, including ballooning costs and delays to infrastructure projects, allegations of corruption, and numerous protests. On Wednesday, an estimated 10,000 people, mobilised by the Workers Without Homes Movement, marched on Sao Paulo's Arena Corinthians stadium demanding more government spending on things like education, infrastructure, and low-income housing.
