FACIAL recognition technology is usually the preserve of border controls and security departments.
In Singapore, it is being used in a preschool. Instead of ringing the doorbell, parents and guardians taking children to Pat’s Schoolhouse in Sembawang look into a calculator-size device at the front door that scans their facial contours and matches the image to a database of authorised guardian profiles.
Once their identity is verified, the system unlocks the front door and lets them in.
“It’s fast and very convenient,” said Richard Seow, who takes his daughter Susannah there. At his daughter’s previous school, the 46-year-old had to wait up to 15 minutes for someone to answer the door.
