A 35-year-old landless dalit labourer from Madhya Pradesh's Dewas is building a toilet to save his eight-year marriage. Dev Karan has been given a January 10 deadline by a court to build a toilet if he wants his wife back, who filed for divorce four years ago.
Dev is sinking into debt to rescue his marriage despite the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government launching the Maryada scheme in 2012 to build free toilets to prevent women from defecating in the open.
His wife Savita and her father Devi Lal welcomed the court decision, Dev was in deep water as his daily wages of Rs 125 were not enough to even take care of his visually challenged father and disabled mother, let alone build a toilet. He needed to mobilize at least Rs 5,000.
"I went to the panchayat and requested for monetary aid. They didn't help me. I was forced to borrow Rs 5,000 from friends, relatives and other villagers to build a respectable toilet. Work is underway to build the toilet for the last four days and we hope the toilet will be complete before the deadline," Dev said. Full story...
