India's president has warned Delhi's new anti-corruption state government against stirring "populist anarchy" after a minister led mobs on illegal night raids on the homes of African women denounced by locals as drug dealers and prostitutes.
In a speech to mark India's Republic Day, President Pranab Mukherjee offered a lesson which appeared to be directed at Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi's chief minister and leader of the Aam Aadmi (Common Man) Party which beat the ruling Congress Party into third place in last month's state election.
The party is now India's fastest growing political group and has attracted several million new members in recent weeks. Its rapid growth means it could be a decisive influence on this Spring's election.
But while its anti-corruption stand is popular, its 'street protest' style of government has unnerved the national government, the state police, and some of its own supporters.
Two of its ministers have recently clashed with the police, including Somnath Bharti, its law minister, after he led a mob of supporters on a 2am raid on African households in south Delhi which local residents said were running drug and prostitution rackets. Full story...
