A network of "water ATM machines" to bring clean drinking water to some of the world's poorest people is being launched in India.
For the equivalent of one penny a time, thousands villagers whose own supplies have been contaminated by sewage will be provided with 10 litres of drinking water that is guaranteed to be clean.
The water will be dispensed via a system similar to cashpoints, with self-service kiosks that supply the water in return for a single Indian rupee.
A leading Congress Party MP and his brother have already set up a pilot scheme to bring affordable clean water to his constituents in Kanakapura, a rural suburb of India's high-tech capital Bangalore.
D.K Shivakumar said many of his constituents had become ill from drinking dirty water and contaminated water from bore wells. He said he wanted them to drink the same quality of water he enjoyed as a legislator and that members of the parliament in New Delhi have access to. Full story...
