Communist officials 'tortured Chinese engineer to death'

Six Communist Party officials have gone on trial for torturing a man to death during a botched interrogation session that has cast light on the ruthless nature of China's war on corruption.

Yu Qiyi, a 42-year-old government engineer from Zhejiang province, died in April after spending 38 days in a controversial and secretive form of custody known as "shuanggui".

Photographs of Mr Yu's emaciated and bruised corpse quickly leaked onto the internet but it was not until late August that a clearer picture of his death began to emerge.

Mr Yu, whose death was originally written off as "accidental", had in fact drowned after his head was repeatedly dunked in a barrel of ice-cold water by six anti-graft investigators, state media reported.

Their trial, at Quzhou's Kecheng District Court, started at around 8.30am on Tuesday with the questioning of one of the six defendants, said Pu Zhiqiang, the lawyer representing Mr Yu's family.

"We want to know the truth," Mr Pu told The Daily Telegraph. Full story...
