Sri Lanka is to charge a politician close to its president's family with the murder of a British aid worker who was stabbed in the neck and shot dead on Christmas Day 2011.
Khuram Shaikh, a 32 year old Red Cross worker based in Gaza, was holidaying in Tangalle, on the island's south coast, when a group of men, including a leading local politician, began sexually harassing his Russian girlfriend, Victoria.
When he remonstrated with them, they attacked him, cut his jugular vein with a broken bottle and then shot him in the head. His girlfriend was gang-raped and beaten unconscious.
Despite assurances that the men responsible would be brought to justice, the eight men arrested for the crimes were later released without charge.
Delays in the case were raised by British ministers and officials, while the victim's MP Simon Danczuk has waged a campaign to shame Sri Lanka into charging the suspects.
According to senior Sri Lankan officials, the eight men originally arrested, including a senior local supporter of President Rajapaksa, are finally to be charged with the murder. Full story...
