A referee was attacked, quartered and beheaded by a mob of angry fans for stabbing to death a football player he had sent off in Brazil.
The man, named locally as Otavio da Silva, was attacked by supporters, who impaled his severed head on a stake in the middle of a pitch in the northern state of Maranhão.
According to the state's public safety department, Mr da Silva, 20, had sent off player Josenir Abreu at an amateur match in the rural district of Pio XII, named after a former Pope, last weekend.
Mr Abreu, 30, allegedly refused to leave the pitch and was said to be unhappy with Mr da Silva's attitude.
A fight then broke out and the referee stabbed Mr Abreu in the chest. He died on the way to hospital. Full story...
