Politicians at the European Parliament can earn up to 2,000 per cent more than the salary of the countries they represent, according to a new survey.
A German consumer price checking site looked at the salaries of MEPs from 27 countries, and then compared that to the amount they would earn at home.
Bulgarian MEPs come out as those who benefit the most, with their salary of €213,924 annually (£184,000) comparing the most favourably with the national average of €9,948 (£8,540). It would take the average Bulgarian 108 years to earn the same amount that a MEP takes home after just one five-year term.
The least comparatively well-off MEPs are those from Luxembourg, where the average gross national income is €44,704 – meaning that the MEPs earn 379 per cent more than their citizens.
British MEPs earn 695 per cent more than the average UK citizen, who will receive €26,902 (£24,000). Full story...
