British police hid files on celebrity suspects...

Hundreds of police files on celebrities and politicians accused of sex assault were so heavily protected that even officers investigating claims could not access them.

Information on high profile suspects was marked as “secret” or “restricted” and effectively hidden so that it was only available to a small number of officers - a system which may have helped prolific offenders like Jimmy Savile escape prosecution.

The approach to sensitive files was designed to stop officers from leaking information to the media for money, according to The Times.

It is also believed that the system may have allowed MP Cyril Smith to escape justice for decades.

 Since the allegations against Savile have been made public there has been a flood of victims who have found the courage to report abuse, many accusing household names. Full story...
