Just weeks ago, the US Senator for Kentucky, Rand Paul, filibustered the Senate approval of the new CIA head John Brennan. His point? That the US federal government should not use drones to target US citizens, especially not on US soil.
The newest information to come out of the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) is likely to upset Senator Paul, his droves of followers and admirers, and the millions of Americans who believe that drones represent a massive incursion into the privacy of the individual, and reflect an overreach of central government.
The FAA's prediction that 10,000 drones could be in the skies by 2020 after guidelines are approved may concern the 79 percent of Americans who told a Gallup poll that US citizens should not be targeted by drones on US soil.
“In the United States alone, over 50 companies, universities, and government organizations are developing and producing some 155 unmanned aircraft designs,” according to the agency.
In February, the FAA said it had issued 1,428 permits to domestic drone operators since 2007, a number that far exceeds previous certifications. Meanwhile, some 327 permits are listed as active. Full story...
