Indian politicians call for Kingfisher boss to be charged after suicide ...

Indian political leaders and commentators last night called for the country's self-styled 'King of Good Times', Vijay Mallya, to be charged after the wife of one of his Kingfisher Airlines staff killed herself because her husband had not been paid for six months.

Their demand marks the billionaire's lowest point yet in a fall from grace that began last year when the fortunes of his Kingfisher Airlines went into a nose dive.

Until then he had been host of the country's most glamorous parties, owner of the UB group Kingfisher beer and liquor giant, the Deccan Chargers Twenty20 cricket team, the Force India Formula One racing franchise, the Scottish distiller Whyte and Mackay, and a string of luxury properties and yachts.

Opposition leader Sharad Yadav called for Mr Mallya to be arrested for "abetment of suicide". He cited the case of a state minister in Haryana, who also owns an airline, and was charged with the same offence after one of his senior staff committed suicide.

"If a person dies because of somebody's torture then the guilty is charged. Why is he (Vijay Mallya) not sent behind bars?" he asked. "He has hurt the old Indian culture. He gives sorrow to the people," he added and called for the government to seize his airline to pay outstanding salaries and debts. Full story...
