Mysterious death of British businessman Neil Heywood in China...

'There is a lot of D.A.N.G.E.R. at the moment,” said my contact, spelling out his words to befuddle anyone listening in. “Meet me at the place we agreed in 15 minutes and we can go for a walk.”

Two minutes later, a text message flashed up: “Take the battery out of your mobile phone now”. In China, there is a general belief that the authorities can track, and listen into, any phone which is not physically disconnected from its power source.

On a bright but windy day in Beijing we walked along the side of a motorway to drown out our voices. He glanced behind to check there was no one following. “I am sorry for being so paranoid,” he explained. “It is just that everyone is really scared at the moment.”

Most unsettling is that the death of this amiable businessman has been swept up into a power struggle at the very top of the Chinese leadership.Two weeks ago, Bo Xilai, Chongqing’s Communist Party secretary, was abruptly purged in a power struggle. The son of one of the founders of the party, Mr Bo was destined, according to supporters, to lead the nation. Heywood was close to Bo and his wife, Gu Kailai, and may have helped their son Bo Guagua gain admission to Harrow School and then Balliol College, Oxford. It is the sort of high-powered connection which few foreigners are able to maintain in China, and it may have cost Heywood his life. Full story...
