Citing numerous incidents in which students were getting hit in the noggin during recess, a Toronto elementary school banned all soccer balls, footballs, volleyballs and even tennis balls from campus. But this being 2011 and the age of protest, students would not let that go without a fight. So not only did the kids get up a petition to bring back the sports equipment, but they organized a schoolyard-wide protest demonstration.
Motto: “Give us our balls back!” Which is awesome and appropriate on so many levels. Photo here. And you know it’s not a real protest mob without at least one kid with a sippy cup.
The students raised such a fuss that even the Ontario Premier got involved. The result? Unclear at this time. But at another Ontario elementary school, Lockview in St. Catherines, kids gathered 95 signatures after their principal imposed a similar ball ban this past June.
