Strauss-Kahn: are we too quick to assume innocence?

It has now been claimed that the chambermaid who made the Dominique Strauss-Kahn rape allegations was working as a prostitute, further undermining her credibility as a witness. But, just as the media rushed to assume his guilt, is there now too much of a rush to assume his innocence?

The prostitution claim was broken by the New York Post, a tabloid which has previously dubbed Strauss-Kahn 'le perv'. Turning its guns on his accuser, the paper revealed that sources "close" to the defence say the maid was "doing double duty … collecting cash on the side from male guests".

The source went on to say: "There is information . . . of her getting extraordinary tips, if you know what I mean. And it's not for bringing extra fucking towels." More...
