Former Czech dissident, playwright and president Vaclav Havel – a past recipient of the Quadriga prize awarded to "role models for enlightenment, dedication and the public good" – threatened to fly into Berlin and return his own 2009 award in person if Mr Putin received it.
Mr Putin was to receive the honour in part because of progress he'd made in improving relations between Russia and Germany, with the awarding committee explaining that this "is one of the great achievements of Vladimir Putin."
But six days after announcing that he was to receive the award on German Reunification Day in October, the Werkstatt Deutschland foundation cited "massive criticism in the media and the political world" as the reason for rescinding it. More...
