A Taiwan court on Thursday fined a doomsday prophet who caused panic across the island by predicting a catastrophic earthquake.
The Nantou District Court slapped a 40,000-Taiwan dollar (1,300-dollar) penalty on Wang Chao-hung on charges of spreading rumours and creating social disorder.
Since November last year, Wang has warned on his blog and in press interviews that Taiwan would be hit by a devastating quake at precisely 1042 am (0242 GMT) on May 11. He said the tremor would have triggered a 170-metre-tall tsunami wave.
Struck by panic, an elderly man reportedly died after leaping from his fifth-storey home in Taipei before the earthquake was supposed to strike.
Wang later said he had been joking and had not intended to cause any harm. Source...
