The shoe is on the other foot.
After a string of scandals involving members of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's government in recent years, the opposition Socialists are now being skewered over their perceived moral relativism in the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair.
Until a week ago, the former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief was being tipped to win the Socialist nomination for president next year.
Had he won it, he probably would have defeated Sarkozy, polls carried out before his arrest last week on sexual assault charges showed.
One of the sticks, with which the Socialists were planning to beat Sarkozy in the election, was morality.
