German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government decided Monday that all of the country's nuclear power plants should be shut down by 2022.
German Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen also said that the country's seven oldest reactors, which were taken off the grid pending safety inspections following the nuclear disaster in Japan in March, would remain offline permanently.
All but three of Germany's newest reactors would be closed by 2021, said Roettgen, and the rest would be shut down a year later.
Roettgen said that a disputed 2.3 billion euro a year tax on spent fuel rods will not be scrapped, however, even as the coalition plans to go ahead with the shutdown. More...

This is good news not only in a fuel source but, by removing any defense missile source, they are eliminating the chance of ever being a part of nuclear war. If only more countries would follow suit and do this, it would stop the threat of nuclear war as well and put pressure on those countries that strive to build weaponry for protection when it won't be needed if the world is in the process of disarming. Bravo to Germany for making this move to join the other nations that are already there.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good idea to phase out nuclear power plants not only in Germany but as well in other places that uses this kind of power source. I'm not good at science and I only know few about this stuff, but look what happen tsunami hit Japan and Fukushima's power plant. You can site that as an example.
