Thousands of extra police officers were drafted onto the streets to take part in Operation Unite, a two-day blitz on binge drinking and "drunken thugs" in Australia and New Zealand.
As well as staging random breath tests for drivers and patrolling known trouble spots, undercover officers, dog squads and mounted police were also deployed into busy nightclub precincts.
Almost two-thirds of the arrests were made in New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, and included numerous assaults on police officers.
The Police Association of NSW said that "chaos and mayhem" reigned in Australian cities each weekend and that the nation clearly had a drinking problem. More...
