UN to release report on Sri Lanka atrocities...

A UN panel looking into alleged human rights abuses during Sri Lanka's civil war handed its report yesterday to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The UN chief appointed the three-member panel in June last year to advise him on alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian laws during the final stages of the war that ended when government troops routed Tamil rebels in May 2009.

The panel was also asked to recommend a course of action that would ensure accountability, in line with a joint commitment made by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Mr Ban. More...
