The organisation claimed that hundreds were killed in the western city of Duekoue on Tuesday.
"There is no doubt that something on a large scale took place in this city, on which the ICRC is continuing to gather information," said Dorothea Krimitsas, an ICRC spokesman, adding that Red Cross representatives had "themselves seen a very large number of bodies".
News of the alleged deaths came as Ivory Coast's strongman Laurent Gbagbo defied calls to surrender as forces loyal to the internationally-recognised President Alassane Ouattara laid siege to the palace where he is thought to be in hiding. More...
