Xiao Mei (not her real name), 23, a former soldier, became one of the first humans in the country Wednesday to be auctioned off to another person as an employee.
The winning bid for Xiao Mei was 180,000 yuan ($27,326) and she will work as a bodyguard. If she signs a one-year contract, her monthly salary would be 15,000 yuan ($2,277).
He Yang, a business consultant, was the only other person who was publicly auctioned off during the first such event of its kind, Zhao Xiaokai, the general manager at the Beijing-based Calsky International Auction Co, told the Global Times. More...
