Singapore transformed Alan Shadrake from an obscure writer into a celebrity...

Would it really surprise anybody? It shouldn’t unless one is not well acquainted with the Singapore style of administering justice.

For writing a book that scandalised Singapore’s judiciary by saying it favours the rich and influential, Alan Shadrake (no relation to the writer) knew he would get himself into trouble.

China found this out when it refused to release jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiao Bo. Such heavy-handed move to silence the voice of reason had only brought Liu world-wide publicity and support.

“Nobody knew Liu before the Nobel Peace Prize. But now they do,” an academic who chose anonymity told FMT.

That may just be what awaits Shadrake. He just got the publicity he does not deserve. Full story...
