The real tragedy behind the Chilean Miners' soap opera...

As a result of lack of health and safety and greedy businessmen, 66 days anguish suffered by the 33 miners in the San José mine was a tragedy more than 600 meters underground.

In the miners’ camp of “La Esperanza” (The Hope), where the relatives of the miners have camped day after day, the Chilean and international press, numbering more than 1500 people, constantly press the families of the miners, for their stories, their joys and sorrows. It is a strange relationship which produces media suffocation and trivializes the tragedy of the miners’ families.

The epic story of the miners erupted with force on 22 August, when it emerged that they were alive after a roof collapse far underground and that their recovery would take “until Xmas”. From there, the media interest grew – a free daily soap opera! More...
