Tasmania is proud of its convict heritage -- so much so that the official tourism board is promoting travel to landmark prisons around the island as part of a new type of getaway dubbed "convictourism."
The Tourism Tasmania promotion comes on the heels of an announcement in July that UNESCO would add five prison sites around the Australian island to its World Heritage List.
"The listing is great news for our tourism industry and will allow us the opportunity to build an additional dimension to our visitors' experiences," Felicia Mariani, chief executive officer of Tourism Tasmania, said in early September. More...
