Tony Blair and the search for redemption...

News that Tony Blair is to give proceeds from his memoirs to the British Legion emerged like a plot-twist in a Shakespearean tragedy.

His attempts to rebuild a reputation that has been battered by his money-grabbing public speaking antics, as well as the horrific spectre of Iraq, have floundered. Perhaps the knowledge that he and his government made a terrible mistake in taking the country to war – costing thousands of Iraqi lives, as well as the lives of our own sons and daughters – has finally taken its toll.

It can’t be easy to face up to what he is responsible for. And while I don’t believe that Tony Blair has reached that point yet, I think he is slowly getting there. I have often thought that his bravado and denial of any wrongdoing is because he simply cannot look at what he has done. That way, madness lies. More...
