India stops Vedanta plans to mine bauxite in Orissa...

India's environment ministry has barred Vedanta Resources from mining bauxite in the country, citing violations of environmental and human rights laws.

The London-based firm has already built a massive refinery below hills sacred to the Dongria Kondh tribal community and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh blasted the firm's "shocking" and "blatant disregard for the rights of the tribal groups.

"There has been a very serious violation of laws, so the project cannot go ahead," Mr Ramesh declared. More...
