A Canadian English teacher is grateful at not having to serve a jail term or pay a heavy fine for drunk driving, instead being sentenced to 300 hours of community service teaching English to disadvantaged children, an official of the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office said over the weekend.
The community service program, co-sponsored by the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office and the World Peace Organization, requires the teacher to provide lessons to children from low-income families during their summer vacation from Aug. 4-27 while they are attending an English summer camp at southern Taiwan's Chiayi Municipal Ta-Tung Primary School.
