The 'honour' and status of being known as the man who executed the most notorious terrorist in India's history, the Mumbai attacker Ajmal Amir Kasab, has attracted a rush of new applicants for the job as hangman.
Kasab was convicted on 86 counts of waging war on India, terrorism and joint responsibility for more than 50 murders in an attack in which a total of 166 were killed.
There have been calls for his death sentence to be carried out speedily and for any appeal to be fast-tracked, but hopes of a swift execution have been hindered by India's lack of a single working hangman. More...
