A Christmas tree with tinsel lies forlornly on the ground with what looks like small presents scattered around. Next to it, a table is laid out with plates, food and cutlery as though the family is ready to come back for dinner. I can see all this clearly as the front wall of the house has exploded and pushed out on to the street, exposing the family dining room. It has been like this for the last three days. Whether the inhabitants of the house, surrounded by collapsed buildings and debris, will ever come back is another question.
The scenes in the streets of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, since the earthquake hit on Tuesday are ones of confusion, panic and despair. Shocked, bleeding people covered in grey dust wander around like ghosts, frantically searching among the rubble for loved ones or seeking transport to hospital for wounded family or friends. More...
