There are two twists in this tale. A 38-year-old Kurla-based businessman returned home one day last month to find that his house had been broken into, and that Rs 3 lakh and gold ornaments worth Rs 6.5 lakh were missing. He lodged a police complaint, and the probe led to a thief inside the house. It turned out that the culprit was the businessman's daughter, who had stolen the money and valuables to raise money to marry her boyfriend.
Then came the second twist. The businessman, after discovering that it was his daughter who was the thief, sought to withdraw the case. He was, however, unable to do so, as an FIR had already been registered. As he was bracing himself to see his daughter go to police custody, a sympathetic police official came up with a brainwave.
