Catholic priests in the biggest NI diocese have been told to drop the hand shake - a traditional sign of peace - at Mass because of swine flu.
The Down and Connor diocese said the tradition of sharing one chalice containing consecrated communion wine would also be suspended for six months.
Parishioners have also been asked to receive communion hosts with their hands rather than opening their mouths.
