Two adult elephants and three calves were hit by the train crossing the southern Tsavo National Park Wednesday, Kenya Wildlife Service official Jonathan Kirui said.
The elephants were heading to drink from a pool of water that had formed from a burst pipe.
A prolonged drought in Kenya is threatening the survival of its wild animals which are a key to the tourism industry, a major foreign exchange earner.
