Pilots in India accused of ‘acting like terrorists...’

The chairman of India’s largest private airline accused his pilots of “behaving like terrorists” after hundreds of them called in sick, causing the cancellation of hundreds of flights, to protest against the dismissal of four colleagues involved in union activities.

Naresh Goyal, the founder of Jet Airways, made the comments after the refusal of disgruntled flight crews to work since Tuesday left tens of thousands of Jet’s passengers stranded in India and overseas.

The four dismissed pilots had been fighting to establish a union to defend workers’ rights at the same time as India’s beleaguered airlines are scrambling to cut excess capacity and costs after years of rapid expansion. More...
